Lexus issues recall of 2016 Lexus RX 350 and RX 450h for faulty airbag issue!

Over 5,000 owners notified to return cars to the factory for airbag replacement as Takata-gate continues

Lexus has just issued a recall for the 2016 Lexus RX 350 and Lexus RX 450h for faulty airbag. Lexus USA, that is (no word yet from Lexus Malaysia). In the US, over 5,000 owners have been affected and Lexus USA has been in touch with them, through an official press release.

According to the press release:

'The involved vehicles are equipped with a driver's knee airbag module that may not have been properly manufactured. This could affect performance of the airbag and increase risk of injury in a crash.'

The press release explains that all affected owners have been identified and informed by Lexus through first class mail, whereupon they are encouraged to bring in their vehicles to the dealerships who will inspect and test the driver's knee airbag and, if necessary, replace it free of charge.

Which countries are affected by the recall? So far, only Lexus USA has issued the recall. But remember, the 2016 Lexus RX is built in two of Lexus' five plants: Cambridge, Ontario, Canada and Kyushu, Fukuoka, Japan. The question is how these two plants distribute worldwide orders for the 2016 Lexus RX. Which ones go to which countries? Only Lexus knows. As far as we know, the 2016 Lexus RX we get in Malaysia is the same one that American buyers get because all are imported in CBU form; there is no distinction between them. Until Lexus Malaysia issues a statement, Malaysian owners can only sit tight and cross their fingers that they're not affected.

Globally, over 44 million cars have been recalled over Takata-gate. This fresh issue only compounds the figures and there seems no end to it. Let's hope other Lexus aren't affected.

Cheers!

All Lexus
