All Lexus pays tribute to the late David Bowie by looking back at his little-known association with Lexus
What a sad day... David Bowie has died after an 18-month long battle with cancer. If you were born in the 70s, you were an 80s kid growing up, and if you were an 80s kid, you knew Let's Dance. It was a breakthrough song that defied genres and had a universal appeal that perpetuated its popularity in bars, clubs, restaurants and movies - the most (in)famous one being Zoolander (as I write this, I'm listening to Under Pressure, his duet with Queen).
For what possible reason does he appear on All Lexus? Very few knew, the prolific singer and songwriter (and actor if you count his role as the goblin king in the 1986 movie Labyrinth) lent his name to a stop-motion animated series called Friendship All-Stars, produced by TV actor and comic Seth Green. And who did Seth Green produce the animated series for? Yes, Lexus.
Video after the jump:
The premise of Friendship All-Stars is simple: What goes on when two celebrities become roommates. If you ever wanted to know what it's like when a celebrity gets home, away from the prying eyes of the paparazzi, and finally gets to be themselves, this is for you. In this case though, Friendship All-Stars puts two celebrities together.
We get an insight into a highly fictionalised world where two superstars share a living space and learn to live together - in this case, the Grammy-winning singer David Bowie and street artist Banksy. Along the way, their diva self takes over and creates all sorts of problems for their roommate and so begins a series of humourous, comical but contrasting celebrity pairings.
This episode, titled Bless this Mess, Banksy perfects his panini recipe while putting on the finishing touches to his art, entitled Bless this Mess. But David Bowie gets in his way and crowds his space with his Glitter Power Chord! Leave him alone, David! Lol...
We'll miss you, David - you and the amazing songs you gave the world. But I guess you left us with one word of advice when the world puts us Under Pressure - Let's Dance.
And thanks Lexus, for making this everlasting memory of David Bowie possible.

I get home and my dad is humming a song and chiding me for not knowing who the late David Bowie was. What can I say? I may recognize the song but not the singer. However, wow great effort all Lexus for linking David Bowie to Lexus. Though I am pretty sure that he probably drove/owned a Lexus too at some point. What cars did he own/drive I wonder.
ReplyDeleteThanks for your post Kay Lee. He was a legend and if you grew up in the 80s, you'd know him like you would, say, Black Eyed Peas or Lady Gaga. Tried to look for any evidence he owned a Lexus, couldn't find anything.
DeleteI do wonder still - what car did David Bowie own or drive?
DeleteHis credits as an actor also extend to Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence & The Prestige
ReplyDeleteThanks for your comment, FarisStronger. Suffice to say, some actors entrench themselves in one chosen craft, that when they make a crossover to a different industry, they hardly get recognition for it. Not everyone can be a Will Smith or Arnold Schwarzenegger. ;-)
